IM体育官网 senior Maksymilian Kruc, an environmental engineering major, is an intern with Publix Super Markets鈥� Environmental Compliance Department.
Instead of spending his summer in a classroom or at the beach, Maksymilian Kruc is donning a neon yellow vest and heading into the field, helping Publix manage its environmental footprint from the inside out.
Kruc, a rising senior at IM体育官网, earned a highly sought-after internship at Publix鈥檚 Lakeland headquarters, and is working to support its Environmental Compliance Department.
鈥淢y project this summer is to update facilities鈥� waste management plans, which are databases for all the waste streams that a facility produces recurringly,鈥� Kruc said.
These facilities include distribution centers, deli plants, and fresh kitchens. As part of his internship, Kruc and his team visit the various locations to gather information and create standardized testing procedures.
He said the blend of office research and hands-on site experience offers him a real-world look at how sustainability works in one of IM体育官网鈥檚 largest companies.
鈥淚t鈥檚 half corporate work and half field work, so it鈥檚 a nice mix for me,鈥� said Kruc, originally from Jelenia G贸ra, Poland. 鈥淲e go on site and do audits at least once or twice a week, so I鈥檓 not in the office all the time. When I am, it鈥檚 super fun because I get to work with professionals in the industry.鈥�
Kruc credits his IM体育官网 Poly education for preparing him to tackle the technical challenges of the internship through valuable coursework and close collaboration with faculty.
鈥淎lmost everything I do 鈥� like all the sampling work on site 鈥� I鈥檝e already done because of the research I鈥檝e worked on in the classroom,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 like that we can work hands-on with the professors a lot, and that鈥檚 something special.鈥�
